Theodore W. “Ted” Meyer: 1930 – 2007

meyer-ted.jpgTheodore W. “Ted” Meyer, 77, a resident of rural Fort Wayne, died at 6:00 p. m. on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at his home in Lake Township. He had been in declining health for the past two years.

Mr. Meyer was born on March 12, 1930 in Berne, a son of Harvey Earl and Elizabeth Marie (Hubner) Meyer, and lived in Fort Wayne as a boy. He moved with his parents to Eel River Township as a youth, and graduated from Huntertown High School in 1947.

He served for a period with the U. S. Army, and was married in Fort Wayne on December 24, 1951 to Pauline E. Rodman. Following his military discharge, he returned to Allen County and lived near Ari before moving to his present farm home in Lake Township in 1974.

He was formerly employed at both Kraft Foods and Newman Foundry in Kendallville. Employed at Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne for over 25 years, he retired from there as a gear cutter and fork lift operator in 1991, and was also engaged in farming in Lake Township.

He attended the Union Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church north of Fort Wayne, and was a member of the Dana Quarter Century Club and the Wood Turners Club. In his leisure time he enjoyed wood turning, fishing, camping, and mushroom hunting.

The surviving relatives include his wife Pauline, to whom he was married for over 55 years; three sons Ronald W. (Maggie) Meyer of Herald, Calif., Paul R. (Janeie) Meyer of Churubusco, and Ernest A. (Kathy) Meyer of Harlan; and three sisters Harvena Friemuth and Eileen Suetterlin, both of Fort Wayne, and Mary Shoudel of Churubusco. There are 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Elizabeth Evelyn Meyer in 1954, and by a son Carl E. Meyer in 1988. Also deceased are four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, October 3, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Chaplain Karen Kossberg and Pastor Gary Reiber, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, northwest of Huntertown.

Laverne R. Stroder: 1943 – 2007

stroder-laverne-r.jpgLaverne R. Stroder, 63, a resident of rural Churubusco, died at 2:00 a. m. on Friday, September 28, 2007, at Miller’s Merry Manor in LaGrange following a brief illness. She had been a patient there for the past ten days.

Ms. Stroder was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 22, 1943, a daughter of Paul and Marie (Kernebeck) Gildehaus, and spent her formative years there. In 1977 she moved from St. Louis to Huntertown and lived there until moving near Churubusco in 1989.

Employed as a machine operator at Tenneco Automotive in Ligonier, she had worked there for the past 13 years. In her leisure time she enjoyed watching sporting events on television, and especially enjoyed watching NASCAR. She also dearly loved her children and grandchildren.

The surviving relatives include her daughter Karen (Gail) Martin of Rome City; her sons Dayton Glover and David (Kristi) Stroder, both of Churubusco; two sisters Evelyn Garman of LaOtto and Mary (Bob) Grill of Arnold, Mo; three brothers Alvin (Mary) Gildehaus of Cedar Hills, Mo., Raymond Gildehaus of Gray Summit, Mo., and Richard (Deloris) Gildehaus of Arnold, Mo; and nine grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters Leona Heil and Marilyn Gildehaus.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a. m. on Monday, October 1, at St. Gaspar’s Catholic Church, north of Rome City. Father Matthew Jozefiak will be the celebrant.

The family will receive friends at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Sunday from 2 to 6 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass. The Rosary will be recited at 6 p. m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Interment will be in St. Gaspar’s Cemetery, Rome City.

Eugene M. “Geno” Nahrwold: 1922 – 2007

nahrwold-eugene.jpgEugene M. “Geno” Nahrwold, 85, a resident of Fort Wayne and well-known Fort Wayne auto dealer, died at 1:30 a. m. on Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Towne House Retirement Center in Fort Wayne following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Nahrwold was born in Fort Wayne on March 23, 1922, a son of Otto and Dorothea (Rose) Nahrwold, and spent his formative years there. He graduated from South Side High School, and later completed his bachelor’s degree at Butler University. He also served in the U. S. Army during World War II.

Following his military discharge, he was married in Fort Wayne to Joanne M. Doty, and was a lifelong resident of Fort Wayne.

Widely-acquainted as the owner and operator of Derby Auto Sales at North Anthony and Washington Streets, he originated the “Buy Here–Pay Here” used car dealership, and was in business for 40 years. He later was employed as the used car manager at the former Hefner Chevrolet dealership, and had also worked at Allen County Motors.

Gene was always proud of the fact that he had coached the 1962 Derby Auto Sales little league championship team.

The surviving relatives include his wife Joanne, to whom he was married for over 59 years; two sons Retired Col. Scott E. (Peggy) Nahrwold of Columbia SC, and Brett “Bo” (Janet) Nahrwold of Fort Wayne; four daughters Lark E. (Karl) Nahrwold of Newport Beach, Calif., Starr E. (Keith) Brautigam of Cedar Springs, Mich., Gina (John) Cox of Southern Pines, NC, and Trina (Jeff) Neeley of Fort Wayne; two sisters Dorothy Wehrling and Janie Bosserman, both of Colorado Springs, Colo; and 12 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceed in death by a brother Victor Nahrwold; and by a sister Melba Harris.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, September 26, at the Wallen Baptist Church, 1001 W. Wallen Road, with Pastor John Suciu, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Wednesday afternoon.

Interment will be in Covington Memorial Gardens in Fort Wayne.

Fredinand A. “Fred” Meyer: 1944 – 2007

meyer-fred.jpgFerdinand A. “Fred” Meyer, 63, a resident of Arcola, died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 25, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Meyer was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on April 28, 1944, a son of Raymond Peter and Elvira (Schultz) Meyer, and spent his early years in Michigan. A veteran of the U. S. Army, he moved to Allen County in 1992, and had been a resident of Arcola since 1998.

Since living in Allen County, he had been employed as a highway construction worker, and had worked at S. E. Johnson, E & B Paving, Inc., and Brooks Construction, all in Fort Wayne. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Arcola.

His marriage took place in Fort Wayne on September 4, 1993 to Lynette J. (Schneider) Freese. She survivies in Arcola.

Other surviving relatives include his three daughters Tammy Meyer of Greensboro, NC, Tonya (George) Barlow of Austin, TX, and Tina Webb of Murrieta, Calif; a step-daughter Michelle (Andy) Cambron of Fort Wayne; a step-son Jamie Freese of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father Harold Rayburn; by a brother Myron Meyer; and by three sisters Jeannette, Donna, and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, September 29, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Father Cyril Fernandes, pastor of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Friday from 5 to 8 p. m.

Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Fort Wayne.

Vadis V. Bailey: 1916 – 2007

bailey-vadis-2.jpgVadis V. Bailey, 91, a resident of Blue Lake near Churubusco and wife of Joseph F. Bailey, died at 5:20 a. m. Sunday, September 16, 2007, at the St. Anne Home in Fort Wayne. She had been in declining heatlh for some time, and had been a patient at the nursing home for nearly three years.

Mrs. Bailey was born near Uniondale in Wells County on August 22, 1916, the only child of Archie and Orpha (Wake) Park. In her formative years she lived with her parents in Fort Wayne for a period before the family returned to Wells County. She graduated from Bluffton High School in 1935.

On April 21, 1940 she was married in Bluffton to Joseph F. Bailey. The couple spent the early years of their marriage in Fort Wayne before moving to Blue Lkae in 1947.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Merriam Christian Chapel. She enjoyed her church, and dearly loved her children and grandchildren. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Winter Haven, Florida for 27 years, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The surviving relatives include her husband Joe, to whom she was married for over 67 years; two sons Bruce A. (Lois) Bailey and Richard M. Bailey, both of Churubusco; her daughter Barbara (Robert) Konger of Winter Haven, Fla; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, September 22, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Steve Pulley, associate pastor of the Merriam Christian Chapel, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Saturday morning from 9:30 a. m. until the time of the service.

Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 9135 N. Meridian St., B-4, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260
