Alma M. Bowers: 1919 – 2009

Alma M. Bowers, 90, a resident of Albion and wife of Virgil J. Bowers, died at 9:02 a. m. on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.  She had been in failing health for the past two months.

Mrs. Bowers was born on August 23, 1919 in Celina, Ohio, a daughter of Everett Earl and Fannie [Marbaugh] Shull, and graduated from Southside High School in Fort Wayne.  On January 5, 1940 she was married to Virgil J. Bowers, and lived in Fort Wayne for a period after her marriage.  The couple moved to Blue Lake near Churubusco in 1940 and lived there until moving to Albion in 1968.

An employee of General Electric in Fort Wayne for 26 years, she retired from there in 1979.  She was a member for over 50 years of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136, and was a member of the Columbia City Rebecca Lodge and the Pythian Sisters.

The surviving relatives include her husband Virgil, to whom she was married for over 69 years; a son Robert R. [Janet] Bowers of Garrett; a daughter Dorthy Ann [William] Scheurich of Avilla; her brother Everett D. ["Shorty"] Shull of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Wilamena Quickery.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Chaplain Kenneth Weaver, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Wednesday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Thursday afternoon.

Interment will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.

Annabelle Bender: 1913 – 2009

Bender,_Annabelle--recent 2Bender, Annabelle--youngAnnabelle Bender, 95, a former resident of Churubusco and widow of Howard G. Bender, died at 5:40 p. m. on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at her residence in New Haven following a brief illness.

Mrs. Bender was born in Hankley, Illinois on November 2, 1913, a daughter of Wallace H. and Cornelia Graham.  On March 29, 1941 she was married in Fort Wayne to Howard G. Bender.  The couple moved to Churubusco from Fort Wayne in 1944 and lived there until moving to Fruitland Park, Florida in 1986.

Mr. Bender preceded her in death on October 6, 1995.  She returned to Indiana in 2003, and had lived at her present home since that time.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, and was a 50 year member of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136.

The surviving relatives include her children Iris [Ralph] Radecki, Gregory G. [Deborah] Bender, and Jeannette Emley, all of Fort Wayne.  There are seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by her sister Janet Telschow; by a brother Wallace P. Graham, and by a great-granddaughter Ieshia Bender.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a. m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.  Chaplain Karen Kosberg will officiate, and interment will follow.

At the request of Mrs. Bender, there will be no calling hours.
