Evelyn Young: 1918 – 2010

Young, EvelynEvelyn Young, 92, a former resident of Albion and more recently a resident of Crawfordsville, passed away at 2:15 p. m. on Monday, April 19, 2010, at the St. Clare Medical Center in Crawfordsville following an illness of two weeks.

Mrs. Young was born in Albion on February 21, 1918, a daughter of Rollin and Orpha (Lindsey) McGuire.  She spent her formative years in that community and graduated from Albion High School in 1938.

On June 30, 1943 she was married in Wolf Lake to H. James Young.  Together, the couple owned and operated Jim’s Hardware in Albion for 25 years, retiring in 1986.  The couple lived all of their married lives in Albion until moving to Crawfordsville six years ago to be near their daughter.

Mr. Young preceded her in death on January 3, 2004.

She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Albion.  In addition to her love for her family, she enjoyed baking, crocheting, and knitting for other people.

The surviving relatives include her daughters Charlotte Boyd of Brandon, Miss., Louise (Jerry) Davis of Frankfort, and Karen (Stephen) Selby of New Market; a brother Carl (Pauline) McGuire of Churubusco, and a sister Marcelle (Lee) Mahnesmith of Terre Haute; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers Carlos McGuire, Wroth McGuire, and Max McGuire.

Private family services will be held at the Berean Baptist Church in Albion with Pastor Doug Keenan, officiating.

At the request of the family, calling hours will be private.

Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

Karen Salesman Rapp: 1952 – 2010

Rapp, Karen_0001Karen Salesman Rapp, 57, a native of Churubusco and wife of Daryl B. Rapp, passed away at 6:50 p. m. on Friday, April 16, 2010, at the family residence in Smith Township following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Rapp was born in Wolf Lake on November 28, 1952, a daughter of Richard L. “Dick” and Dorothy (Hyndman) Salesman, and spent her formative years in Churubusco.  She graduated from Churubusco High School in 1971, and graduated from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1974.

On August 9, 1974 she was married in Allen County to Daryl B. Rapp of Churubusco, and moved with her husband to Texas in 1975.  She had lived in Katy, Texas before returning to her Churubusco home recently.

She had worked as a registered nurse, but found her calling as a homemaker and a devoted mother who home schooled her daughter.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Katy and its Covenant Sunday School Class.  In her leisure time she enjoyed travel, family activities, and caring for horses and other animals.

The surviving relatives include her husband of over 35 years Daryl; her daughter Sarah Rapp of Houston, Texas; her mother Dorothy Salesman of Churubusco; two sisters Diane (Randy) Zolman and Kathi  Engle, both of Churubusco; a brother Greg (Teresa) Salesman of Churubusco;  two uncles Don Hyndman and Dale (Joan) Hyndman, both of Churubusco; an aunt Barbara Hyndman of Churubusco; and several cousins.  Her extended family was a vital part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her father Richard “Dick” Salesman on March 5, 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Friday, April 23, 2010, at the Good News Baptist Church in Churubusco with Pastor Edward A. Thompson, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the family plot at Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

Debra Lynn Maus: 1959 – 2010

Maus, Debra_0001Debra L. Maus, 50, a resident of Fort Wayne and well known financial adviser, passed away at 4:08 p. m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with her loved ones by her side.

Mrs. Maus was born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky on August 2, 1959, the daughter of Maurice and Pearl (Berryman) Gritton.  She spent her formative years in Mercer County, Kentucky and graduated from Harrodsburg High School in 1977.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, and later received her master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.

She moved to Fort Wayne in 1996 from Wabash, and was a professional financial adviser with Edward Jones in Fort Wayne.  Her life was marked by a wide circle of friends and professional accomplishments.  She was a member of the Huntertown United Methodist Church, Churubusco Rotary, and had traveled world-wide.

Debbie had many friends and acquaintances that she touched.  She is now with God in a place where angels dwell, and will be one of them.

On July 24, 1987 she was married in Mercer County, Kentucky to Jim Maus.  He survives.

Other surviving relatives include her parents Maurice and Pearl Gritton of Danville, Kentucky; and a brother and sister-in-law Steve and Millie Gritton of Tryon, North Carolina.

The body will be taken from the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco to the Ransdell Funeral Chapel in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p. m. on Sunday.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a. m. on Monday, April 19, 2010, at the funeral home with Revs. Harold Best and John David Lane, officiating.  There will also be calling one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, Mercer County, Kentucky.

Local memorial services will be held at 7 p. m. on Monday, April 26, 2010, at the Huntertown United Methodist Church, 16021 Lima Road, with Pastor Greg Hiatt, officiating.

For those who wish, memorials may be directed to the Huntertown United Methodist Church food bank, or to the Churubusco Rotary Scholarship Fund.

Kohle Willard Bowser: 2010

Bowser, Kohle_0001Kohle Willard Bowser, four month old son of Kevin W. Bowser and Ashley Bratten of Churubusco, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 10, 2010.  He had been found unresponsive at the family residence, and was pronounced dead on arrival at 12:43 p. m. at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.

The surviving relatives in addition to his parents are his grandparents Ron and Peg Bowser of Churubusco, Mary and Troy Howard of Warsaw, and Ron (Sue Miller) Bratten of Churubusco; his great-grandparents Tom and Dianne Pappenbrock of Churubusco and Paul Howard of Warsaw; his aunts and uncles Dave Bowser of Albion, Marc Bowser of Chicago, Tasha Bratten of Churubusco, Shanelle Bratten of Warsaw, Cassie Bratten of Churubusco, Linda Howard of Warsaw, Anthony Bratten of Nappanee, and Tanner Howard of Warsaw; several great aunts and uncles including Wayne Bowser of Churubusco; and special friends Justin Tarr, Justin Claymiller, and Linda Claymiller.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Thursday, April  15, 2010, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Chaplain Steve Jones, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Thursday morning.

Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

Donald E. Meyer: 1952 – 2010

Meyer,_Donald_0001Donald E. Meyer, 57, a resident of rural Albion, passed away at 4:00 a. m. on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the family residence in York Township.  He had been in declining health since 2006, and had been seriously ill for the past month.

Mr. Meyer was born on November 1, 1952, and was raised by his grandparents Dale E. and Virginia Meyer.  He attended the former York Center School, and graduated from Central Noble High School in 1971.

Employed at the Fort Wayne Foundry in Columbia City, he had worked there as a quality control and maintenance worker.  He had also previously been employed at Newnam’s Foundry and Seamco, both in Kendallville.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Albion.   As a young man he was active in 4-H and the  York Township Horse & Pony Club.    In his leisure time he enjoyed horses, bowling, golfing, playing the drums, canoeing, and kayaking.

On September 28, 1990 he was married in Avilla to Lori Ann Harris.  She survives.

Other surviving relatives include his son David E. Meyer of Albion; his parents Janet and Robert Miller of Albion; his siblings Lee Ann Wicker of Auburn, Lisa Brashear of Albion, Robert (Charlotte) Miller, Jr. of Moriarty, N. M., and Brenda (John) Moyer of Kendallville; an aunt Pat (Duane) Norris of Albion; his in-laws Robert A. and Henrietta Harris of LaOtto; and two grandchildren Dirk E. Meyer and Lillian Jean Meyer.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; a sister-in-law Lynn Rose Harris; an uncle Dale R. Meyer; and a close friend Pat Biddle

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in the Sugar Grove Church of God, 5019 E   500 S-57, Churubusco, with Pastor Timothy Grable, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Tuesday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Ege Catholic Cemetery, Noble County.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Women’s Care Center, P. O. Box 12966, Fort Wayne, IN  46866; or Boys & Girls Clubs, 2609 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne, IN  46807
