John W. “Bill” Green, 90, a resident of rural Churubusco and widely acquainted Smith Township farmer, passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at 10:07 p. m., at the family residence.Â He had been in declining health for some time, but had only been seriously ill for the past two weeks.
Mr. Green was born in Wells County in July 13, 1919, a son of Bruce Clifton and Nina Pearl (Hawkins) Green.Â He spent his formative years in Monroe Township in Grant County, and graduated from Jefferson Township High School in Upland in 1937.Â As a young man he served with the U. S. Army, and was married at Farville in Grant County on September 18, 1942 to Almetta Joan Nelson of Van Buren.
The couple spent the early years of their marriage in Grant County and in LaPorte, before moving from Handfield to their present farm home west of Churubusco in 1949.Â Mr. Green was a prominent area dairy farmer for many years, and also worked as the district director for the Ag Stabilization & Conservation Service from 1965 until retiring in 1987.
In addition to exhibiting a strong work ethic, his life was marked by community involvement and memberships in several organizations.Â He was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, where he had served in a variety of administrative capacities.Â Â He was also a member of Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne, Mizpah Shrine in Fort Wayne, Whitley County Shrine Club, the Farmer’s Union, and the Whitley County Democratic Party.
An avid airplane pilot, he greatly enjoyed his professional and church work.Â Most especially he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to many.
The surviving relatives include his wife Almetta, to whom he was married for over 67 years; and his children William R. (Linda) Green of Churubusco, Robert B. (Dianne) Green of LaOtto, and Jack L. Green and Barbara (Kerry) Boggs, both of Churubusco.Â Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother James Green; a sister Dora Mae Bedwell; a daughter-in-law Nancy (Schenher) Green; a granddaughter Leslie Green; and a great-granddaughter Frances Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the Churubusco United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dale H. Linhart, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.Â Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM will conduct memorial services at 8 p. m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Leslie Green Scholarship Fund, Parkview Home Health & Hospice, or Churubusco United Methodist Church.
