June Pauline (Leiter) Hadley: 1924 – 2011

Hadley, JuneJune Pauline (Leiter) Hadley, 86, a resident of rural LaOtto and widow of Vaughan A. Hadley, passed away at 2:55 p. m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.  She had been a patient there since Wednesday after suffering an apparent stroke.

Mrs. Hadley was born on June 3, 1924 in Noble County, a daughter of Clarence Samuel and Pearl Edith (Wood) Leiter.  She spent her formative years in Swan Township, and graduated from Huntertown High School in 1943.

As a young woman she had worked at Essex Wire in Fort Wayne for 13 years, and was married at Simpson United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne to Vaughan A. Hadley on May 21, 1954.  She and her husband lived in Fort Wayne for a period before moving to the family farm in Swan Township where she spent most of her adult life.

She was a longtime member of Simpson United Methodist Church, a member of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136, and a member of Sigma Phi Gama Sorority.  As an outstanding homemaker who deeply loved her family, she was an exceptional cook, hostess, seamstress, and an avid bird watcher.  She had a green thumb in the garden and possessed expert skills in growing orchids and plants.

Mr. Hadley preceded her in death on April 22, 2004.

The surviving relatives include her daughter Sandra S. Hadley of rural LaOtto; two sisters Mary (Louie) Peduto of  Shelbyville and Dorothy Martin of Kendallville; a brother Ray (Patsy) Leiter of LaOtto; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers Glen Leiter, Glade Leiter, Robert Leiter, and Cleo Leiter; and by three sisters Carrie Russell, Helen Thorn, and Gladys McNabb.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Edward E.  Kester, pastor of Simpson United Methodist Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 1 p. m. on Saturday until the time of the service.

Interment will be in the Hooper-King Cemetery, west of Avilla.

Jeanne A. Short: 1942 – 2011

Short, Jeanne 2Jeanne A. Short, 68, a resident of Fort Wayne, passed away at 3:58 p. m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.  She had been in failing health since December.

Ms. Short was born on April 20, 1942 in Connersville, a daughter of Kenneth R. and Catherine (Lunsford) Klein.  She graduated from North Side High School in Fort Wayne in 1960, and was a 1963 graduate of the former Parkview Hospital School of Nursing.  In addition, she was also a graduate of St. Francis College.

Her career as a registered nurse spanned most of her adult life, first working at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne for 26 years.  She later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1988 where she worked at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in the pediatric intensive care unit before returning to Fort Wayne in 2004.

She was a member of the Huntertown United Methodist Church.

The surviving relatives include her children Todd (Pam) Short of Phoenix, Az., and Lisa (Tony) Lucio of Fort Wayne; her step-mother Rosalyn Klein of Carmel; four brothers Bill (Mary) Klein of Lakeland, Fla., Donald (Deborah) Klein of Carmel, Kevin (Debra) Klein of Fort Wayne, and Craig (Susan) Klein of Oxnard, Calif; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her step-father Roy Beard; and by a daughter Amy C. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Greg Hiatt, pastor of Huntertown United Methodist Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p. m.

Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Allen County.

Sally Gilbert Gardner: 1935 – 2011

Sally (Gilbert) Gardner, 75, a native of Churubusco and more recently of Winona Lake, passed away unexpectedly at 4:05 p. m. on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Grace Village Assisted Living in Winona Lake, where she had been a resident for the past 19 years.

Mrs. Gardner was born in Churubusco on August 10, 1935, a daughter of Jasper L. and Helen (Rowland) Gilbert.  She spent her formative years in Churubusco and graduated from Churubusco High School.

As an adult she lived in Union City, Michigan for a period, and had lived in Hallandale, Florida for 20 years before moving to the Winona Lake facility in 1992.  While living in Michigan, she served as a school bus driver, and later in life worked as a waitress.

Her husband Leo Gardner preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and by two infant sisters.

The surviving relatives include her three children Charles J. (Susan) Brown of Claypool, James L. (Sandra) Brown of Jones, Mich., and Charlene L. Samson of Lehigh Acres, Fla; her brothers Gordon (Eva) Gilbert and Rowland (Elaine) Gilbert, both of Churubusco; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

At the request of the family, there will be no services or calling hours.

Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco is in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline McGuire: 1920 – 2011

McGuire, Pauline_0001Pauline McGuire, 90, a resident of rural Churubusco and wife of Carl McGuire, passed away at 6:00 p. m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the family residence in Smith Township following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. McGuire was born in Churubusco on May 9, 1920, a daughter of Charles and Alice (Wappes) Weidman, and spent all of her life in this area.

On May 8, 1943 she was married in Churubusco to Carl McGuire.  The couple lived in Green Township in Noble County for a period, and have lived at their present farm home in Smith Township since 1949.

A homemaker, she also assisted her husband on the family farm.  In her leisure time she enjoyed her yard and flowers, and most especially loved and cherished her family.

The surviving relatives include her husband Carl, to whom she was married for over 67 years; her daughter Patricia McGuire of Churubusco; a daughter-in-law Judy McGuire of Churubusco; a grandson Stacy (Krista) Holzinger of Churubusco; and two great-grandsons Jacob Holzinger and Logan Holzinger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Jerry L. McGuire on January 16, 2011; by a grandson Chad McGuire on January 27, 2008; and by a brother Archie Weidman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Rick Van Horn, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday after 12 noon until the time of the service.

Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
