Richard H. Horstmeyer 1928 – 2011

Horstmeyer, Richard_0001Richard H. Horstmeyer, passed away at age 83, at Parkview Hospital, on October 26, 2011.

He is a son of the late Paul and Helen (Kehr) Horstmeyer, born April 1, 1928, in Fort Wayne.  A graduate of Indiana University with a degree in Chemistry, he enjoyed a long career in public education as a high school teacher of physics, chemistry and math in Bunker Hill, Kokomo, as well as at Huntertown High School, and Central High School, Fort Wayne.  He then became Vice Principal of Northrop High School, and lastly, Principal of Elmhurst High School before retiring in 1987.

He was also an active member and elder of Our Hope Lutheran Church, Huntertown, for over 40 years, holding the past offices of Chairman of the Congregation and Chairman of the Board of Elders, as well as, Bible Study and Youth Group Leader.

He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Barbara Ann (Huber) Horstmeyer; four sons Rick (Kathleen), Gregg (Joyce), Kirk, and Markus (Judy); a brother Robert (Ann) Horstmeyer; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Horstmeyer is preceded in death by his son Philip John and two sisters Joyce Meyers and Carol Bair.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, October 29, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Hope Lutheran Church, Huntertown.  The visitation is on Friday  from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., at Sheets and Childs Funeral Home, at 206 North Main Street, Churubusco. Additional calling one hour prior to service at church.

Memorials may be directed to Our Hope Lutheran Church.

Internment at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Phyllis A. Holloway: 1937 – 2011

Holloway, Phillis_0001Phyllis A. Holloway, 73, a resident of Fort Wayne and formerly of Blue Lake near Churubusco, passed away at her home and was found on Friday afternoon, October 21, 2011.  She had been in declining health for some time, but her death was unexpected.

Mrs. Holloway was born in Fort Wayne on November 4, 1937, a daughter of Robert and Hazel (Lopshire) Claymiller, and spent her formative years there.

On July 10, 1964 she was married in Fort Wayne to John E. Holloway.  The couple lived there for a period, and had lived at Blue Lake near Churubusco, returning to Fort Wayne in 1986.

She was a homemaker.

Mr. Holloway preceded her in death on June 15, 1992.

The surviving relatives include two sons Chris Holloway of Churubusco and Steve Holloway of Huntertown; four sisters Deloris (Harry) Neville of Fort Wayne, Dorothy (Frank) Gage of Roanoke, and Judy Bourne and Linda Johnson, both of Fort Wayne; two brothers Paul Claymiller of Corunna and Jim Claymiller of  Fort Wayne; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son Gary A. Pee; and by a brother Gene Claymiller.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Corinne Boruff-Stucker, pastor of Churubusco United Methodist Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Tuesday morning.

Interment will be in the Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Jerry Cee Reynolds 1943 – 2011

Jerry Cee Reynolds, 68, a resident of Churubusco passed away at 9:49 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2011, at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, after a long illness.

 Mr. Reynolds was born on April 2, 1943 in Angola, a son of Jess C. and Bernice Maxine (Rose) Reynolds. He spent his formative years in Angola, graduating from Angola High School in 1961.

Following his service in the United States Army, he worked as a machinist beginning at General Electric in 1970 and retiring in 2000 as the owner of REM Corp.

On May 16, 1964 he married Chloe (Showalter) Reynolds in Angola.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Jay (Liz) Reynolds of Lafayette and Tina (Rick) Heredeen of Florida; four brothers Gary (Susan) Reynolds, Max (Tami) Reynolds, Dick (Diana) Reynolds all of Angola, and Bob Reynolds of Florida; and four granddaughters China, Maddy, Haley, and Hanna.

Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco, with military rites by U. S. Army Funeral Detail. There will be calling from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Funeral Home.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Churubusco United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 250 N. Main St. Churubusco, IN 46723.

Ann R. Barrett: 1916 – 2011

Barrett, Ann_0001Ann R. Barrett, 94, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 3:50 p. m. on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne following a brief illness.

Mrs. Barrett was born on November 1, 1916 in Bedford, a daughter of John Owen and Ruth (Kindred) Roberts, and graduated from Shawswick High School.

A nurse all of her adult life, she graduated from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Indianapolis, later earned her bachelor’s in nursing from Indiana University, and had also earned a master’s degree in public health administration from the University of Michigan.

She was nurse with the Red Cross Bloodmobile program, and had also worked at various hospitals throughout her career.  After completing her master’s degree she worked as the director of Visiting Nurse Service in Saginaw, Michigan for a period, and for two years worked for the World Health Organization on the Isle of Truk doing nurse’s training.

She did four tours of duty with the United States Peace Corps–twice in Sierra Leone, and once in the Republic of Malawi and in Zaire.

Upon completing her Peace Corps service, she lived in Glendale, Arizona for a period and was affiliated with Lincoln Hospital there.  She was an expert seamstress and painter, and while living in that area was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year in Phoenix, where she donated her time in doing quilting and knitting afghans.

She had lived in Churubusco the past eight years, and continued to volunteer her abilities in quilting and knitting for patients at the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System.   She was given a Whitley County Heart of Gold Award for that service, and donated her financial gift to various charities.

On December 28, 1940 she was married to Max L. Barrett.  He preceded her in death in 1968.

The surviving relatives include her children John (Linda) Barrett of Churubusco and Elizabeth J. “Bets” Barrett of Scottsdale, Az; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter Barbara Ann Perry; by a sister Mary K. Grafton; and by a great-grandson Jared Michael Hyndman.

A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 5 p. m. on Sunday, October 16, 2011, in the fellowship hall of Churubusco United Methodist Church.

At the request of Mrs. Barrett, there will be no calling hours or formal funeral service.

Catherine C. Avery: 1923 – 2011

Avery, Catherine_0001Catherine C. Avery, 88, a resident of Churubusco and widow of William J. Avery, Jr., passed away at 7:35 p. m. on Friday, October 7, 2011, at the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.  She had been in declining health for some time.

Mrs. Avery was born in Fort Wayne on April 21, 1923, a daughter of William H. F. and Margaret C. (Voetter) Beerman.  She spent her early years in Fort Wayne, graduated from Elmhurst High School in 1941, and during World War II  worked in civil service.

On February 25, 1943 she was married in Fort Wayne to William J. Avery, Jr.  The couple moved to Churubusco in 1958, and she worked as a secretary in Fort Wayne for several companies over the years.  Employed as a bookkeeper for the Fort Wayne State Developmental Center, she retired from there in 1988 after 15 years.

Mrs. Avery was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco.

Mr. Avery preceded her in death unexpectedly on April 20, 1968.

The surviving relatives include her daughter Becki (Chuck) Mathieu of Churubusco; a son Kevin J. Avery of Churubusco; and a daughter-in-law Aldina “Dee” Avery of Fort Wayne.  There are eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son Mark S. Avery on August 11, 1996; by three sisters Wilma Haag, Margaret Mennewisch, and Eleanor Cates; and by a grandson Shane T. Avery.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p. m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at Ege Catholic Cemetery in Noble County with Father Danney Pinto, pastor of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, officiating.  Interment will follow.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.
