William G. McCoy: 1937 – 2012

McCoy, William_0001William G. McCoy, 75, of Albion, passed away at 1:55 p. m. on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Avalon Village in Ligonier following a lengthy illness.

Mr. McCoy was born on February 27, 1937 on the family farm southwest of Albion, a son of James Ralph and Freida L. (Gaerte) McCoy.  He spent his formative years in York Township and graduated from Albion-Jefferson High School in 1955.

He was engaged in dairy farming in York Township for much of his life, and had also worked at Monsanto and later at Maple Leaf Farms.  Following his retirement he wintered in Florida.  He was a member of the Noble County Gas & Steam Engine Organization.

On April 17, 1970 he was married to Daisy M. Clouse.  She preceded him in death on June 7, 1998.

The surviving relatives include two brothers James R. (Linda) McCoy and John (Donna) McCoy, both of Albion; two sisters Janice M. Aungst of Dade City, Fla., and Mary Inlow (Ron) Poyser of Albion; his companion Flora VanStraaten of Albion; her children Tim Tillman of Albion and John (Sharon) Tillman of Mulberry, Fla; and her eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He also had numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Mark E. Wood, pastor of Burr Oak Baptist Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends after 11 a. m. Tuesday at the funeral home until the hour of the service.

Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Central Noble Food Pantry, Albion.

Herbert Raymond Brooks: 1934 – 2012

magnet-army.jpgHerbert Raymond Brooks, 77, a resident of Wolf Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Brooks was born in North Judson on November 4, 1934, a son of Raymond and Clara (Katchke) Brooks.  He spent his formative years there, graduated from North Judson High School, and as a young man served with the U. S. Army.

He was employed as a cattleman for several farmers over the years, and had moved to Wolf Lake from Leiters Ford, Indiana in 1979.

He was married to Patricia Maciejack.  She preceded him in death in 1978.

The surviving relatives include six children Jason Brooks of Wolf Lake, Patrick (Peggy) Brooks of Fort Wayne, Herb Brooks of Lipan, Texas, Mark (Angela) Brooks of Lindsay, Nebraska, James (Carla) Brooks of Hope Mills, North Carolina, and Lora Ezekiel of Florence, Alabama; a sister Anna Paul of Montrey; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his companion Helen Fulk; a brother Raymond Brooks; and by three sisters Myrtle Maciejack, Clara Mae Fort, and Edna Moe.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p. m. on Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Rick Van Horn, pastor of Christ Community Church, officiating.  Military honors will be conducted by the U. S. Army Funeral Detail and by Gilbert Davis American Legion Post 157.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday after 11 a. m. until the hour of the service.

John Lee “Thatch” Plunkett: 1948 – 2012

Plunkett, John_0001John Lee “Thatch” Plunkett, 64, a resident of Churubusco and formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away at 6:30 a. m. on Friday, April 20, 2012, at the family residence.  He had been battling cancer for the past seven years, and had been more seriously ill since 2010.

Mr. Plunkett was born in Fort Wayne on January 20, 1948, a son of John James and Alice Caroline (Christiansen) Plunkett.  He lived in Churubusco as a boy  before moving with his family to Fort Wayne in 1960.  He graduated from Elmhurst High School, and served with the U. S. Army in Vietnam.  After completing his military service he lived in Fort Wayne for a period before moving to Churubusco in 1987.

Employed at B & W Equipment in Fort Wayne for 23 years, he retired from there as the welding shop supervisor.

He was a member of the Churubusco Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Turtle Post 3846, and was known as a dependable, trustworthy, caring and “ornery” man.

On February 23, 2012 he was married in Churubusco to Janet (Gordy) Shroyer.  She survives.

Other surviving relatives include his children Maria Plunkett and Troy Lee Plunkett, both of Fort Wayne, and Amber Plunkett of Columbia City; three step-children Doug (Michelle) Shroyer of Albion, and Lori Fulk and Kathy (Ted) Hays, both of Churubusco; a sister Beverly Plunkett of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Sharon and Darlene.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m.  Tuesday, April 24, 2012, in the Churubusco United Methodist Church, with Pastor Corinne K. Boruff-Stucker, officiating.

The family will receive friends at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Monday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service Tuesday morning.

Interment with military graveside rites will be in the Highland Park Cemetery in Fort Wayne.

Verba Mae Wilson: 1939 – 2012

Wilson, VerbaVerba Mae Wilson, 73, a resident of Eel River Township in Allen County and wife of Lyle G. Wilson, passed away at 5:43 a. m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.  She had been in failing health for the past month, and had been a patient there for the past three weeks.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Seward, Nebraska on March 9, 1939, a daughter of Earl W. and Esther E. (Eicher) Stutzman.  As a teenager she came to Goshen and graduated from Bethany Christian High School there in 1956.  It was there that she met her husband, and the couple were married in Goshen on November 18, 1957.  She had lived most of her adult life in Allen County.

A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, she was a homemaker most of her life, and also taught piano privately and was engaged in domestic work.  A member of the Central Church, east of Fort Wayne, she had served as the church’s organist, and also taught Sunday School there for over 30 years.  She loved children, music, and most especially loved and cherished her family.

The surviving relatives include her husband Lyle G. Wilson, to whom she was married for over 54 years; a daughter Gina (Troy) Cole of Wabash; two sons Robin (Barbara) Wilson of Rogers, Ark. and Scot (Sharon) Wilson of Pigeon, Mich; a brother Cloy (Linda) Stutzman of Milford, Neb; two sisters Joyce Buschert of Goshen and Pauline (Harlan) Hochstetler of Philadelphia, Penn; a sister-in-law Ruby Stutzman of Commerce City, Col; and five grandsons Jonathon Wilson, Timothy Wilson, Trae Cole, Joshua Wilson, and Kameron Cole.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Lawrence Stutzman; and by a brother-in-law Dave Buschert.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the Central Church, 5801 Schwartz Road, with Pastors Don Delagrange and Phil Miller, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Saturday from  2 to 6 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service Sunday afternoon.

Interment will be in the Yaggy Cemetery, Grabill.

Roxie L. Gloyd: 1949 – 2012

Gloyd, RoxieRoxie L. Gloyd, 62, a resident of rural Churubusco in Allen County and wife of Dennis R. Gloyd, passed away after a long battle with cancer at 5:31 p. m. on Good Friday, April  6, 2012, at her home in Eel River Township with her family and friends by her side.   She had been in declining health since July.

Mrs. Gloyd was born in Wolf Lake on June 14, 1949, a daughter of Max G. and Lenora M. (Hawk) Gross.  As a young girl she lived in Noble County, and moved to Eel River Township with her parents in 1963.  She graduated from Huntertown High School in 1967.

On September 2, 1967 she was married in Churubusco to Dennis R. Gloyd, and spent her adult life in Allen County.

She worked as a server for American Legion Post 82 and later at Post 499, both in Fort Wayne, and was a member of the Gilbert Davis American Legion Post 157 Ladies Auxiliary in Churubusco.

Roxie had a natural radiant personality that attracted people to her.  She dearly loved and cherished her family, and was known for helping to keep them in balance.

The surviving relatives include her husband Dennis; her children Kimberly (Jimmy) Walker and Angela (Andrew) Sherman, both of Churubusco, and Alisa (Jason) Hess and Jessica (Matthew) Schnellbach, both of Fort Wayne; a brother Jerrold “Jake” (Debbie) Gross of Churubusco; a sister Melanie “Sue” (Tom) Gilbert of Churubusco; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Friday, April 13, 2012, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastors Timothy Grable and David Biberstein, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p. m., Thursday from 2 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Friday morning.
