Janice “Mama” Sue Holmes: 1940 – 2012

Holmes, Sue_0001Janice “Mama” Sue Holmes, 71, wife of Timothy A. Holmes and long-time Churubusco restaurant owner and operator, passed away at 9:40 p. m. on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at her summer home at Blue Lake near Churubusco following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Holmes was born in Elkhart on October 24, 1940, a daughter of Lemuel Carl and Zaylia Bonnie (Girten) Gilbert, and most of her formative years there. She attended Elkhart High School, and graduated from Angola High School.

On October 27, 1973 she was married in Elkhart to Timothy A. Holmes. The couple lived in Huntertown for a period, and opened Mama Sue’s Restaurant in Churubusco in 1983. In 1984 they purchased the former Green Grill in Churubusco, and established Papa’s Place in 1984, moving to Churubusco that same year. Along with her husband she co-owned and operated the restaurant for over 20 years, retiring in 2004.

She was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church.

The surviving relatives include her husband Tim; four sons Anthony (Sarah) Truax of Kendallville, Christopher (Tammy) Holmes of Elkhart, and Todd (Jen) Holmes and Timmy (Tera) Holmes, both of Churubusco; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Jack Gilbert and Carl Gilbert.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at the Churubusco United Methodist Church, with Pastor Corinne Boruff-Stucker, officiating.

The family will receive friends at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service Thursday morning.

Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

Joyce Gibson: 1947 – 2012

Joyce  Gibson, 65, of Churubusco, passed away at 4:00 am on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at her home in Churubusco.

Ms. Gibson was born on March 14, 1947 in Kendallville, a daughter of Edward and Audra (Porter) King.  She spent her formative years in Kendallville, and graduated from Kendallville  High School.

She made and sold jewelry until she became ill.

She traveled the United States and enjoyed life, and cherished time spent with her family.

Ms. Gibson was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church.

The surviving relatives include her mother; two sons – Robert (Sarah) Gibson and Todd (Amanda) Gibson both of Fort Wayne; a sister Wilma McCombs of Fort Wayne; grandchildren – Austin, Jessica, Myranda, Joshua, Lyndsey, and Sarah.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother Duwan King.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Churubusco United Methodist Church, August 2, 2012 at 1:00 pm, Pastor Corinne K. Boruff-Stucker, officiating.

Olga M. Buesching: 1914 – 2012

Buesching, Olga_0001Olga Martha (Paschka) Buesching, 98, who lived a long, industrious and eventful life, journeyed to Heaven on Sunday, July 15, 2012.  She was reunited with her devoted husband Fred “Fritz” Buesching, and her recently departed daughter Nancy Tucker and son-in-law Bob Tucker.

Born on January 3, 1914 in Fort Wayne to Theodore and Anna (Schlink) Paschka, she graduated from Luther Institute (now Concordia Lutheran High School), and worked as a bookkeeper at a local business in the early 1930’s.

On March 22, 1936 she was married at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne to Frederick Gust Buesching.  Following their marriage she and her husband farmed for more than 50 years in Lake Township where they also founded Buesching’s Peat Moss in 1947.

She was a member of Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  While she was very proud of the five children that they raised, she was most proud of “hanging onto” the family farm through the tough depression years and keeping the family together.  She will be remembered for her competitive attitude, strong will, her forthright manner and her sense of humor, especially while playing Euchre with her husband Fred.  She truly lived life to the fullest and got the most out of every moment!

She is survived by her four children Kenton (Janne) Buesching of Fort Wayne, Bonnie (Al) Gore of Warsaw, Marlene Augenstein of Fort Wayne, and Dr. Don (Colleen) Buesching of Noblesville; a brother Theodore (Marcella) Paschka of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren Rhonda (Todd) Jones of Pierceton, Robert Buesching of Fort Wayne, Lori Thompson of Orcutt, Calif., Michael Gore of Costa Mesa, Calif., Randy Augenstein of Leander, Tx., Daniel (Ginger) Buesching of Fort Wayne, Rene’ (Joe) Leitheim of Hamilton, River (Shandra) Augenstein of Doe Bay, Wash., Ryan (Olivia) Augenstein of Fort Wayne, Seth (Tiffany) Buesching of Noblesville, Kathleen (Scott) Mulholland of Chicago, and Logan Buesching of Noblesville; 16 great-grandchildren; two nephews Gaylord (Marilyn) Gerke of The Villages, Fla., and Gene Paschka of Fort Wayne; and a niece and caregiver Judy (widow of nephew Linden) Gerke of Leo.

Her husband preceded her in death on December 16, 1993.  Also deceased are her parents, a daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Robert Tucker; a sister Mary Gerke, along with a sister and two brothers who died in childhood; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Olga’s richly textured life will be celebrated at 3 p. m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 6318 W. California Rd., with visitation two hours prior to the service.  Pastor William E. Mueller, officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery following the service.

Lloyd T. Young: 1926 – 2012

Young, DarrellLloyd T. Young , 85, of Albion, passed away at 4:45 pm on Friday, July 13, 2012 at North Ridge Village Nursing Home in Albion.

Mr. Young was born on July 21, 1926 in Green Township, Noble County, a son of Fred M. and Flossie (Heintzelman). He spent his formative years in Noble County.

On September 15, 1946 he was married to Ruth Anna Brown.

He was a Noble County farmer.

Mr. Young was a member of Blue River Church of the Brethren.

The surviving relatives include wife, Ruth Anna Young of Albion; daughter Carol Young of Albion; a sister Mary Ann Wakeman of Kendallville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a Son John S. Young December 19, 2006; a brother Donald E. Young.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, with Pastor Craig Alan Myers, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, or one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

Darrell W. Hoot: 1922 – 2012

hoot_0001Darrell W. Hoot, 90, a resident of Huntertown, passed away peacefully at his home at 7:20 a. m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012.

Mr. Hoot was born May 27, 1922 in Huntertown to Blake E. & Alla Mae (Emminger) Hoot, and was a lifelong resident of the Huntertown community.

He served in the US Coast Guard and helped to form the Huntertown VFW Post 11314. He farmed for over 20 years, retired in 1982 from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 22 years, and later worked for Furrow Building Materials for ten years.

He was a member of Pathway Community Church in Fort Wayne, Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM, and was past worthy patron of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136.  He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne, and Mizpah Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S.  In addition, he was also an active member of Huntertown Lions Club. He loved woodworking and started a community woodworking class. It grew into a group of 250 members, now known as Huntertown Woodworkers.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” H. (Rogers)Hoot, to whom he was married for over 64 years; a  daughter, Beverly (Dave) Wagner of Roanoke; three sons, Marvin (Apryl) Hoot of Woodburn, Ronald (Sharon) Hoot of Fort Wayne,and  Roger (Nancy) Hoot of LaOtto; 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers.

Calling hours are from 4-8 pm Monday at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco, with a Masonic memorial service at 8:00 pm.

Funeral service will be held at Pathway Community Church, 11910 Shearwater Run, (off Carroll Rd.) at 11:00 am Tuesday, with calling  there two hours prior to the service.   Pastor Ron Williams and Dr. David Biberstein will officiate, and interment will follow in Huntertown Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Pathway Community Church, Huntertown Lions Club, or  Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home.
