Alma M. Bowers: 1919 – 2009

Alma M. Bowers, 90, a resident of Albion and wife of Virgil J. Bowers, died at 9:02 a. m. on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.  She had been in failing health for the past two months.

Mrs. Bowers was born on August 23, 1919 in Celina, Ohio, a daughter of Everett Earl and Fannie [Marbaugh] Shull, and graduated from Southside High School in Fort Wayne.  On January 5, 1940 she was married to Virgil J. Bowers, and lived in Fort Wayne for a period after her marriage.  The couple moved to Blue Lake near Churubusco in 1940 and lived there until moving to Albion in 1968.

An employee of General Electric in Fort Wayne for 26 years, she retired from there in 1979.  She was a member for over 50 years of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136, and was a member of the Columbia City Rebecca Lodge and the Pythian Sisters.

The surviving relatives include her husband Virgil, to whom she was married for over 69 years; a son Robert R. [Janet] Bowers of Garrett; a daughter Dorthy Ann [William] Scheurich of Avilla; her brother Everett D. ["Shorty"] Shull of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Wilamena Quickery.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Chaplain Kenneth Weaver, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Wednesday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Thursday afternoon.

Interment will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
