Florence G. McDaniel 1916 – 2012

McDaniel, FlorenceFlorence G. McDaniel, 96, a former resident of Churubusco and widow of Benjamin F. McDaniel, passed away at 10:45 a.m. on March 28, 2012, at Bell Trace Health and Living Center, in Bloomington, three day after her birthday.

She was born to Ralph and Sarah (Marshall) Swoverland in Carmel on March 25, 1916, and spent her formative years in various small communities in Indiana.  After high school she studied nursing at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in 1934, and became a registered nurse doing private duty nursing for several years.  After she married Benjamin F. McDaniel on February 27, 1940 in Elkhart, she raised a family while he served the in the U.S. Army.

In 1952 the family moved to Churubusco where they owned and operated the Western Auto Store.  Mrs. McDaniel resumed her nursing career working as a nurse and later as the Director of Nursing at Whitley County Hospital in Columbia City. She retired from Nursing in 1964 and continued to assist her husband in the operation of their business until their retirement in 1976. Following their retirement  they continued to live in Churubusco but also spent half the year near Punta Gorda, Florida until Mr. McDaniel’s death in 1998. Mrs. McDaniel had spent the last several years of her life in Bloomington.

She is survived by her children John (Liz) McDaniel of Bloomington, Nancy (Mike) Contat of Bellaire, Mich., and Sharon McDaniel of Washington D.C.; three grandchildren Shaun (Lisa) Culp, Heather (Jim) Gray, and Katherine McDaniel; and six great-grandchildren

Mrs. McDaniel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and by two brothers Donald Swoverland, and Rev. Marshall Swoverland.

Private family graveside services will be held at the Christian Chapel Cemetery in Merriam with Rev. Corinne Boruff-Stucker, pastor of Churubusco United Methodist Church, officiating. 

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.  Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco is in charge of the arrangements.

Eric F. Bruot: 1959 – 2012

Bruot, Eric_0001Eric F. Bruot, 53, a resident of Churubusco, was received into the arms of his Lord at 9:25 p. m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He had been in failing health for the past year.

Mr. Bruot was born on February 21, 1959 in Fort Wayne, a son of Roger and  Delores (Frank) Bruot.  He spent his formative years there and graduated from Northrop High School in 1977.

On March 21, 1981 he was married in Fort Wayne to Debra Kay Sanderson.  The couple lived in New Haven for a period before moving to Churubusco in 1988.  He was previously employed as a mold maker for 18 years, and for the past eight years had worked as a foreman at Superior Manufacturing in Fort Wayne.

A member of Columbia City United Methodist Church, he was an avid golfer, and a Purdue Boilermakers fan.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and most especially loved and cherished his granddaughters and all of his family.

The surviving relatives include his wife Debra; his children Erica (Emanuel) Cuenca of Garrett, Kevin (Jessica) Bruot of Indianapolis, and David Bruot of Fort Wayne; his mother Delores (Richard) Newman of Fort Wayne; two sisters Kim (Tom) Weaver of Fort Wayne and Beth (John) Tchinski of Mission Viejo, Calif; and two granddaughters Jayda and Layla Cuenca.  He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. David Arnold, pastor of Columbia City United Methodist Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning.

Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.

Pamela L. Smith 1951 – 2012

Pamela L. Smith, 60, of rural Albion, passed away at 6:05 am on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Wesley Healthcare in Auburn.

Mrs. Smith was born on April 8, 1951 in Gary, Indiana, a Daughter of Leroy and Isabel (Zigler) Mason.  She spent her formative years in Gary.

On August 28, 1999 she was married in the yard of their home near Wolf Lake to Curtis Lee Smith.

The surviving relatives include two daughters  Evon (Lonnie) Gardner of Piedmont, SC and Katrina Wilcox of Columbia City; a son Kenneth (Barbra) Niman of Fort Wayne; a sister Carol (Roy) Hein of Fordsville, KY; two grandsons – Frankie Sams and Johnathan Wilcox; a granddaughter Jazelyn Hemphill; two great-granddaughters – Brooklyn and Abby Sams.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Sheila Crothers.

At the family’s request there will be no services.

Ila Mae Hinrichs 1941 – 2012

Ila Mae  Hinrichs, 71, of Fort Wayne, passed away at 5:00 am on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. 

Mrs. Hinrichs was born on March 1, 1941 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Jesse Hartzog and Helen (Seitner) Richadrson. She spent her formative years in Fort Wayne. 

On September 7, 1974 she was married in Fort Wayne, In to Ronald G. Hinrichs.

She was employed at Keenan Hotel for a short while, where she worked in the kitchen.  

Her spouse preceded her in death on January 28, 2006.

The surviving relatives include her mother; a twin sister Ila Rae (Jack) Cunningham of Fort Wayne; a brother – in – laws Arthur Hinrichs of Howe, TX.

She was preceded in death by her father. 

By the request of the family there will be no services.  

Burial of her cremains will be in the Eel River Cemetery, at a later date.

Michael Scott 1954 – 2012

Michael A. Scott, 57, of Churubusco, passed away at 1:10 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at his residence after a five -year battle with cancer.

Mike was born on August 3, 1954 in Fort Wayne, the son of Willard H. and Peggy A. (Schlose) Scott. He spent his formative years in Fort Wayne, and graduated from Snider High School.

Mike was a bartender at the VFW in Churubusco for many years. He was employed at C & A Tool until January 2012.

Surviving relatives include his parents and a sister, Michele Scott, of Fort Wayne.

Graveside services will be held at Covington Memorial Gardens, 8408 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne, at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, March 23, 2012 with Pastor Susan K. Kester, officiating.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Churubusco American Legion Post 157 from 1 – 4 p.m.

Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco is in charge of the arrangements.

For those who wish, memorials may be directed to Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana. Envelopes for memorials will be available at the Legion on Saturday.
