Martha E. Folken: 1928 - 2007
Martha E. Folken, 79, a resident of Huntertown, died at 8:20 a. m. on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the Canterbury Rehabilitation Center in Fort Wayne, where she was given not only excellent care, but the daily love and support of an extraordinarily compassionate staff.
Ms. Folken was born in Huntertown on April 22, 1928, a daughter of Henry and Laura (Eby) Byerley, and was a lifelong resident of that community. She had been employed for several years as a medication aid at the Byron Health Center in Fort Wayne, retiring from there in 1990.
Martha enjoyed a full life with beloved family and friends. She loved crocheting, cooking, baking, crafts, chocolate, and was an avid Indiana University basketball fan. Her generosity, loving heart, trademark bawdy sense of humor, and incredible pecan pie endeared her to so many. She will be deeply missed.
The surviving relatives include two daughters Lauralee Aven of Fort Wayne and Susan Folken (Scott) Wermie of Tucson, Ariz; a son James E. (Linda) Aven of Huntertown; an “adopted” daughter Imogene Nusbaum-Snyder of Fort Wayne; two sisters Agnes Scott and Hilda Spangle, both of Huntertown; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Josephine Fosnaugh; and by three brothers Eugene Byerley, Clifton “Bill” Byerley, and Richard Byerley.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Wednesday, October 10, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with the Rev. Phillip Emerson, pastor of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p. m.
Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, Allen County.
For those who wish, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 9135 N. Meridian St., B-4, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260
