Nancy K. Green: 1948 - 2008

green-nancy-2.jpgNancy K. Green, 59, a resident of rural Churubusco and wife of Jack L. Green, died at 6:25 a. m. on Friday, March 14, 2008, in the comfort of her home following a valiant 15 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Mrs. Green was born in Fort Wayne on May 7, 1948, a daughter of Robert B. “Beany” and Erin A. “Mick” (Neufer) Schenher, and spent her formative years in the Churubusco-area. She graduated from Churubusco High School in 1966 and later earned her R. N. from IPFW in 1968.

Following her college graduation she worked for a year as a Vista volunteer in Oklahoma, was married at Ege on August 7, 1971 to Jack L. Green, and spent most of her life on the family farm west of Churubusco. Employed as a nurse in the office of Dr. Linus Minnick in Churubusco for over ten years, she also worked as a postal carrier at the U. S. Post Office in Churubusco, and later did painting along with her father.

A member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Ege, she was its CCD director for several years. She was a great Chicago Cubs baseball fan, enjoyed all kinds of yard work and gardening, and enjoyed taking walks. Next to her Heavenly Father, her family was the most important thing in her life, and she loved and cherished time spent with them.

Throughout her 15-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis and also the tragic loss of her daughter and death of her parents, she always held a positive attitude, never complained, and was an inspiration to her family and all who knew her.

The surviving relatives include her loving and caring husband Jack; three children Jon (Angie) Green of Churubusco, Emily Green of St. Louis, Mo., and Brett “Andy” (Tara) Green of Churubusco; her in-laws John William “Bill” and Almetta Green of Churubusco; three brothers Stan (Linda) Schenher of Indianapolis, and Jeff (Vicki) Schenher and Curt (Dawn) Schenher, both of Churubusco; two sisters Susie (Eric) Johnson of Elk Grove, Calif., and Sally (Jim) Panyard of Angola; and three grandchildren Jessie Green, Allison Green, and Katelyn Green.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Leslie E. Green on June 28, 1993.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a. m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Ege with Father Danney Pinto, the celebrant.

The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Monday from 5 to 8 p. m., on Tuesday from 2 to 8 p. m., or on Wednesday morning from 8:30 a. m. to 9:30 a. m. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p. m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Interment will be in the Ege Catholic Cemetery, Noble County.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Leslie Green Scholarship Fund or to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ege.

    To Jack Green,
We were co-workers for a brief time before my leaving in September of 1987 at C & A Tool in Churubusco. I remember you as the kindest person that I had the priveledge to know while working there. I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your wife, Nancy. Although I did not know her, I know that she was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed. As a husband of 26-plus years and a father of 4 wonderful children, I can imagine, but cannot know of your grief. Please accept my condolences at her passing.
Until we all can rejoice together in His presence,I wish only the best for you.

    Green Family
I am very sorry to read about the loss of Nancy. As I see Jack and the boys at local airports, it always reminds me of the trajic loss of Leslie. When I drive through that intersection in C. City, I always say a little prayer for her and the family. Then to find out about Nancy’s MS was very troubling. I lost my mom to cancer when she was 54, but she did not have to suffer with it the 15 years Nancy fought her battle.
    To Susie, my classmate.
I am truly sorry about the loss of your sister. Your brothers and sisters were always kind to me even though they may not have known me very well, but knew we were classmates. I will be out of town working but am trying to schedule time to be there Wednesday morning.
    You’re in our prayers.

Nancy suffered for so many years but her faith in God, her religion, and your support sustained her all these years. You are a remarkable family that I have truly loved for all these years since we first met.

Nancy is with our God now, and we will all see her again.

    Dear Families,
I am a friend of Kelly Weseli, Stan’s daughter, and she sent me this beautiful obituary. Even though I never had the privilege of meeting Nancy, I know she was a wonderful woman to all who knew and loved her. Your family will remain in my prayers and I know that God will wrap His hands around you and comfort you like only He can. Although we miss her on Earth, she is smiling down on all of us and is so happy to be with her Father. Let us take comfort in that.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

    Jack,
    Jon and Angie and family,
    Andy and Tara,
    Emily,
and the Schenher and Green families,

I was so saddened to hear of Nancy’s death.
I don’t think I will ever meet a greater woman or a more benevolent spirit as Nancy Schenher Green.
Just talking to Nancy or being in the same room put most people on a different level of consciousness — a much greater and spiritual one.
There are very few people in life that are without fault, and completely and consistently good with few — if any — regrets, but Nancy was one of those rare individuals.
I feel blessed and fortunate that I had the opportunity to know her and that my kids and grandkids had the opportunity to share their life with such a beautiful, wonderful person as their Aunt Nancy.

    Dear Jack
I know how hard it is to watch someone you love suffer, after losing my Mother from cancer a few years ago, she is with Jesus and Leslie now and feeling no pain. You will be with her again soon.

  17. Margo McBride Says:

    Jack, Emily, Jonathon, & Andy
God bless you! I have so many wonderful memories of being in VISTA with Nancy in 1969-’70. We were room mates in two areas in Oklahoma (Ryal and Idabel, OK). She and I worked so hard to gain the confidence of the Creek Indians residents in Ryal and finaly did! I remember many wonderful philospical discussions with her. We were all of 20 at the time, so you can imagine! I also remember going to church with her on Sundays and then heading on down to the PATTY ANN CAFE” in Henreyetta,OK for our weekly lunch of Chef Salads. Nancy and I moved to a new VISTA project in Idabel, OK where we lived and worked with our other VISTA roomie, Barb. Nancy was inspirational to everyone who knew her. She always had a smile on her face. If anyone ever had a solid sense of social concern for others, it was Nancy. Even though we lived across the country from each other I felt a deep friendship with her all these years. I know that she profoundly loved her family (husband, children and grand kids. Jack and children, we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
Blessings, Love, Peace and Comfort be with you!!!
    Margo and Bob McBride

  18. Barb Hanniford Says:

    Jack and family,

I am the other VISTA roommate that Margo McBride mentions in the previous condolence. We lived together in Idabel, Oklahoma for several months in 1970. When I first arrived, I lived with another VISTA volunteer, and Nancy and Margo shared an apartment nearby. I loved being invited to their place to share a meal that Nancy had a major role in preparing. Her warmth and hospitality were very evident, even all those years ago. She also had the greatest twinkle in her eye which I can still see in my own mind’s eye, 38 years later. When my own roommate left, Nancy and Margo gave up a comfortable apartment to move into a tiny, less comfortable house with me. I don’t remember Nancy complaining about making the move, and we shared many fun times and a lot of laughter before her VISTA stint ended and she returned home. She was such a caring person, and she really made a difference in the lives she touched. I can tell that this same spirit continued throughout her life. I regret that I did not stay in touch with her well through the years. I was so saddened to hear of her struggle with M.S. and her recent death. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,

    Barb Pelander(and Glenn) Hanniford
